Dubai, UAEI'm Sultan Al-Farhan, an A-Level student at Nord Anglia International School Dubai in Dubai, UAE, studying Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Economics alongside an EPQ.
My interest in the environment started early: memorising animals at four, hiking, and sailing summers in Culver, Indiana and Dubai. I earned my powerboat licence at 16. Time on the water, and listening to David Attenborough, drove me to think about how we affect the ocean, which led me to research whether fishing could ever be both sustainable and profitable.
Living in the UAE, I witnessed the degradation of our beautiful mountains, quarried in Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah to make virgin concrete blocks, while waste piles up in abundance. During my internship with Dr. Zaid Ghouleh at Carboclave, I explored injecting CO₂ into recycled concrete. It showed me sustainability isn't just about impact: waste can be a resource, and materials can be durable, premium quality and carbon negative.
